RULES:

Reload by firing off the screen. You don't need to shoot the spot they indicate on the arcade machine.

If you get shot, hit by a knife, rocket, or grenade, or slashed, you lose a life as well as any powerups you may have had.

If you shoot an innocent, you are demoted one level and may lose a life depending on the version. Remember, they are the ones with power here, not the thugs with guns. Whatever.

Extra continues (or lives in the arcade) are earned by getting enough points.

In the SEGA ports, you must perform satisfactory enough to be allowed to proceed to the next level, otherwise you must repeat it. The full details are below.

At the end of a level, you can get promoted based on your accuracy %. Double, triple, and even quadruple promotions are possible, except in the SEGA ports. Just getting a single promotion is much harder, a double promotion needs close to 100% accuracy, and triple or quadruple promotions are simply not possible. If your accuracy is too low, then you remain the rank you currently are. Each innocent you kill drops you a notch.

There are 6 ranks: Patrolman; Detective; Sergeant; Captain; Lieutenant; and Commander; in order of lowest to highest.

SEGA Quotas: This is kind of hard to explain. Basically, you need to maintain a high enough accuracy % (I'm rusty, but I believe its 60% on Easy, and 85% on Hard) and avoid killing any innocents. Killing an innocent will pretty much screw your chances, but it is possible to still pass. If you manage to get a double promotion (very hard to do), then you can kill a hostage and still pass. If you completely bombed the third level and killed 2 hostages, you could find yourself busted down from Sergeant to Patrolman. But, if you can redo the level with a rank of Detective, you will proceed, so you obviously don't need a certain rank. I believe that the requirements are that you must be 1 rank higher than when you started the stage.

POWERUPS:

Default: Not actually a powerup, but what the hey. Pretty weak, no range, and full clip is only 6 bullets. But then again, you never lose it. Well, it is better than the...

Rifle: For the love of God, DON'T PICK THIS UP! Each time you pull the trigger, 3 shots are fired. Is this actually a good thing? Maybe if another bad guy is standing behind another, you were facing a boss, or you whiff the first shot. Of course, watch out for innocents standing behind bad guys, cause you'll whack them too. Otherwise, this just decreases your accuracy. Full clip is 12 bullets. On the SEGA ports, these don't even appear on harder difficulties (wonder why?) Fuck it like a little bitch.

Magnum Bullets: Well, it's just a magnum, but the announcer says bullets too. Anyway, very cool weapon. A powerful weapon, it can make short work of bosses and it leaves bullet holes everywhere. It also has a bigger hit radius than that dinky pistol. Full clip is 6 bullets.

Automatic: A good weapon. A full clip is a whopping 15 bullets, so you can kill quite a few people without reloading.

Shotgun: Now we're talking! This baby sprays death over a very wide range. Just make sure no civilians happen to occupy that space as well. I would guess it's powerful, but I never got to use it against a boss. Full clip is 6 shells.

Machine Gun: Meh. This boasts automatic fire, so you can just hold down the trigger for continuous firing. Full clip is 36 bullets, and that is all you get. The gun is gone after that, thus why its not worth grabbing if you have something else (like the Magnum, Shotgun, or even Automatic.) Not to nitpick, but this is actually a submachine gun.

Grenade Gun: Well, this is (supposedly) the grand daddy of them all. The explosive rounds have quite a radius. However, the rate of fire is a bit slower than the other guns. Full clip is 8 grenades, and that's all you get. It's gone after that, and there is only one or two in the whole game. Pretty lame, actually.

BAD GUYS:

About 99.9% of the enemies behave like this: They appear, and you either shoot them or they shoot (or slash) you. In the arcade, they might miss a shot once in a blue moon. Some may throw knives or grenades. In that case, you can shoot the said projectiles to save yourself. Otherwise, you get hit. In the arcade, if you miss a thug, but get close, he'll duck for cover. None of the other enemies appear often enough to be mentioned here.

MY TIPS:

Its hard to explain, but there is an easy way to recognize friend or foe. Innocents are colored much 'brighter' than the enemies. This will also let you know who is an imposter...

In the arcade, enemies will duck if you narrowly miss. This means you don't get shot either. So always take a shot, unless there are innocents nearby.

Although worth Gunstar points, you probably better off ignoring the various enemy-killing items (exploding tanker, falling signs.) Not really worth the effort, as you'll usually only catch one guy in a blast.

The Machine Gun kinda sucks in my opinion.

For those of us trying to make quota in the SEGA versions, here's 2 valuable tips. 1: DON'T PICK UP A RIFLE! Say goodbye to your quota if you do. Let yourself get shot to lose it. 2: Don't simply point at bosses and unload on them. Bosses are invicible for a split-second after being shot, so all those bullets in between are misses. Single shots, people. Konami: Doing its part to stop n00bism.

ABOUT THIS GUIDE:

Oh, this is the fun one. This various versions of this game differ greatly in content, so the enemies, powerups, and general stuff you encounter in different areas will vary. In other words, this guide is actually pretty useless! Well, I did my best to make it as useful as possible, but just know that you won't face everything I mention, and might even face something I don't even know about. Just think of it this way: the game will be more exciting since you don't know what to expect.
