RULES:

You can have a maximum of 5 lives at once.

You have 6 bullets in a clip. In Saturn mode, you can have several different amounts. To reload, fire off the screen.

Throughout the game, you will meet various DBR researchers, often in peril. Shooting one will result in a point penalty and a lost life. Saving them will give you points and possibly a Life Bonus, and may also determine what path you take. At the end of a level, you will receive a Life Bonus or 2 for rescuing a certain amount.

There are various paths through the game. There are all sorts of ways to change your path.

Shoot projectiles out of the air to save yourself: barrels, axes, acid spit, knives, and fireballs.

You get a bonus for shooting monsters in the head, especially if that's the only place you hit them. Obviously, this doesn't work on creatures that don't have heads.

On the other hand, you lose points whenever you get hit, kill a researcher, or let a researcher die.

Most enemies can have their various limbs blown off. You can blow off arms to remove an enemy's ability to use a weapon, and cause an incoming attack with an arm to miss altogether. However, if an enemy loses an arm, he will simply resort to clawing with his other arm, biting if he lacks either arm, and simply ramming you if his torso is all that remains. Typically when a zombie loses their head, they're finished, but sometimes (due to blasting their upper torso WITHOUT hitting the head and somehow not doing enough damage to kill) they can still function. Not very common, but I've done it a few times.

POWERUPS:

Life Bonus: Gives you one extra life, unless you are at the max.

Coin: Gives you 200 points.

Golden Frog: Eh? Gives you 1,000 points.

BAD GUYS:

Some of these guys weren't named in the manual, so I had to come up with a few (probably lame) placeholders. A few got names in the sequels, and I dubbed them upon their forefathers.

Sam: Zombie with a purplish skin. They just shamble up and try to punch or headbutt you. A single headshot will kill them. There are several different looking types zombies (black shirt or no shirt), but I haven't noticed any different characteristics.

Steven: Looks just like a normal zombie. Acts just like a normal zombie, too. However, these zombies die with only 1 hit regardless of where you hit. Sometimes found simply milling around without attacking. In these cases, they don't need to be killed and are a source of free points.

Johnny: A zombie armed with an axe in each hand. Some will come up close and try to slash you, while others will throw their axes at you. The latter will throw one or two axes, then will usually walk off or otherwise not approach you so you don't have to kill them. However, some will then attack unarmed. 2 shots to the head will kill them. The ones who throw axes are typically weaker, dying with a single hit to the chest (although they can survive a limb hit.)

Hellhound: Really messed up canines. They leap at you and rip out your jugular. They often jump side to side as they approach, making them tricky to hit sometimes. They come in two flavors: blue and red. The blue ones die in one hit, but the red ones can survive a couple body shots. You can't alter their anatomy.

Evitan: Green monster resembling a moldy zombie. They move pretty fast for a zombie and can really surprise you. In fact, some of them will drop in from above or come sliding and whack you with a stick. The durability of the 'normal' ones seem random; I think most take 2 headshots to kill but I've done plenty in just 1. The hangers die with only one headshot. The fallers die with 1 shot no matter where.

Simon: A muscular zombie. These guys will either punch or charge you with their shoulders. They will take 2 shots to the head to drop.

Mummy: A very thin (almost skeletal) zombie. Basically the same as a Sam, except less durable. Any head shot will immediately drop them.

Bradley: Looks like a Sam, only they're shirtless and NOT purplish. They behave like Sams, but they're slightly more durable. In particular, they (usually) take TWO shots to the head to kill. There are 2 types: green-skinned and peach-skinned with plenty of blood.

Murrer: A maggot-like creature. They slither up and try to latch onto your face. A single shot will kill one. The ones you find ravaging corpses are invincible until they start moving.

Frogs: Self-explanatory. They jump up and bite, then vanish. Dies with one hit.

Bob: A corpulent zombie. When unarmed, they will charge you. Some carry barrels (oil or wooden) which they throw at you. The red oil barrels take 4 shots to destroy while the wooden ones shatter with only 1. You can blow off their arms to make them drop the barrel. After throwing or dropping their barrels, they either won't attack and therefore don't have to be killed, or come at you unarmed. Their stomachs can take a lot of lead and their heads will take 2 shots. Head shots are a must on Hard.

Samson: A zombie with a chainsaw. These guys jam their saws into your neck. 2 shots to the head will kill, but they usually hold the chainsaw right in front of their heads, making a clean shot difficult. If you can't get a headshot, unloading a full clip into their stomach will work just as well. Blow of both arms to disarm one.

Bat: Winged mammals. They fly straight at you like kamikaze pilots. 1 bullet = 1 kill. They aren't very fast nor will they try to dodge so they are easy to take down. They practice hit and run, so if they connect, you won't see them again.

Damned If I Know (DIIK's): Ugly little mass of something that only appears in one place. They will either slither up to you and explode in your face or spit yellow crap at you. Good news is the former method of attack means at least they won't bother you again. 1 bullet kills, but they slither fast!

Killer Monkey: A chimp with a bad attitude. Method of attack is to jump on you, which they will accomplish by jumping all over the place. I'd assume a headshot kills but they move so fast I can't even tell. A hit can knock them down. Hit 'em while they're down! You can't alter their anatomy.

Rubin: Jack the Ripper look-alike. Watch out for surprise drop-ins; they often will get a free hit unless shot out of the air. Comes in 2 flavors: gray or brown. The gray ones will simply try to get up close and slash. The brown ones will also throw knives (they each carry 2.) They're fast little punks. A headshot USUALLY kills them. Aside from the head, you can't alter their anatomy.

Burrell: A zombie with a HUGE hammer. They will try to crush your skull with a swing. 2 headshots to kill. Blow off their right arm to disarm them.

Beta Albino: White creatures. They act just like monkeys, only they are a bit tougher and they don't jump all over the place. Not sure how durable the head is because they move so fast. You can't alter their anatomy.

Trejo: Zombies with a ball-and-chain. They start off swinging their ball around until they get enough speed. Once they do, incoming! It doesn't seem to be possible to shoot it out of the air. However, you can stop them from throwing it by shooting them a couple times. 2 headshots to kill. Blow off the right arm to disarm them.

Randy: Well, he looks like a killer monkey, except for the armor. Annoying little bastards. Their method of attack is to either get in your face and slash or to fire their claws at you. Very easy when alone, but 2 attacking at once is annoying. They'll take multiple shots to the chest and once again they move too fast for me to confirm headshots. Like the monkeys, a hit can knock him down, and you can freely shoot him up while he's stunned. You can't alter their anatomy.

Arthur: Zombies who have parts of their body (the left half) covered by metal (namely the left side of the torso and head, plus the left arm.) If you hit any part of them covered by armor, your shot will harmlessly ricochet off. Or so you would think. On the Saturn (dunno about the arcade, it seems their entire head and torso is vulnerable. I used the controller to accurately shoot the armored parts and always did damage. The arm is invulnerable though. Oftentimes shooting the head the first time makes him raise his left arm to block a followup shot, though it usually doesn't work.

Spider: Arachnid. They try to jump on your face. They either fall from above or come crawling up. Just 1 bullet... If they hit you, they vanish.

Albino: See Beta Albinos. Much more dangerous than their earlier siblings. These guys are just like them, except they can also throw blue blades at you. Once again, I don't know how deadly a headshot is. You can't alter their anatomy.

Bob Samson: Big (as in fat) zombies that carry blowtorches. For the most part, they act like Samson. However, they usually hold their weapon above their head so headshots are easy. 2 headshots to kill. Blow off both arms to disarm. When disarmed, they can charge like Bob.

MY TIPS:

George Romero fans should already know this, but aim for the head if at all possible. They die faster, and it gets you more points. However, don't always rely on being able to do so. If the zombie is blocking his head, or if time is insufficient, just go for the chest.

After some research, I discovered that the durability of enemies varies within their own species. In particular, enemies attacking researchers tend to be weaker (sometimes dying with only a single hit.) In addition, the damage an enemy can withstand depends on the difficulty. What I'm saying is don't be counting bullets and assuming a certain amount will do the trick.

For the most part, the enemy who is CLOSEST to you is your biggest threat. Enemies with projectiles are an exception. However, this never really comes down to this. Seriously, a lot of people just don't get this.

Unlike most other shooting games, you don't get much of a grace period after being hit. You can lose a lot of life fast! Keep shooting!

Many enemies have a death groan/shriek/noise. Listen for them so you know when to keep shooting. If you don't hear a dying utterance, they're gonna get back up. This is most effective with the red Hellhounds and Killer Monkeys.

The key to this game is knowing when to shoot carefully, and when to panic. Calmly firing single shots will handle most situations. Occasionally (like when a zombie jumps out in your face), you'll need to fill something full of lead quickly. However, the drawback simply unloading is that your accuracy won't be as good unless you're a cyborg or something, and doing it constantly will wear your finger out quickly.

Never put the gun down until the level is over. I guarantee something will jump out and surprise you.

If an enemy is taking a swing at you, blow off the arm he's using and the attack will miss! Of course, that's easier said than done, and hardly worth it unless you know that you can't possibly kill the enemy before he finishes the attack.

If you think you might accidentally hit a researcher, then don't fire. Its better to simply let a researcher die than to hit one yourself; you lose a life, 200 points, and the person dies anyway.

Going for the best ending? You should. Here's the basic lesson: aim for the head whenever possible; memorize the locations of the coins and golden frogs; save as many researchers as possible (you lose points for either letting them die or by shooting them yourself. The latter costs you more points); and avoid being hit (yeah, you should always try not to be hit, but here it will also take off points.)

In addition, another good idea is to play a 2P game... by yourself! This means additional zombies for you to kill (but don't actually use the other gun. You want all the points to go to YOU, not be divided between both players.) Plus, the second player can take hits for you and preserve your life and points. However, this makes the game much harder, especially since the bosses step it up. Needless to say, don't have them continue during a boss fight.

I know the FMV's can start to grate on you on repeat plays, but don't skip em'! Give yourself a break! Of course, if you're at home you could always pause.

ABOUT THIS GUIDE:

Unlike my other guides, this one provides a very detailed overview of the game and the enemies you will face. I also cover the locations of all known powerups and the various routes. Basically, the entire game. However, note that the exact location of the Golden Frogs and Coins varies. They're always in the same area, but one game they may be in a vase and another game they might be in a crate next to the vase. Also, to cover the paths in an intelligent and relatively hassle-free fashion, there are hyperlinks linking with other places on the same page. Just look for the underlined words. The paragraph you're looking for SHOULD be at the very top of the page.

CHEATS/UNLOCKABLES:

Cheat Menu: At the main menu, enter the following code: L, R, R, L, L, R. You'll hear a tone to confirm entry. Now hold L and R while selecting Arcade Mode. At this menu, you can set the number of lives (including unlimited, meaning you don't lose a life when hit), what chapter you start on (you can also view the 2 demos and the ending) and toggle the color of the blood. The blood and chapter select remain set as long as the game is on but the lives change back from unlimited. If you start another game, you only have to do the 'hold L and R' part. If you reenter the first part, you disable the menu.

Display Score: Pause the game, then hold down L and R, then press X three times. Now your score will be shown on screen.

Unlimited Ammo: Pause the game, hold down L and R, then press Y three times. Now you never need to reload.

Extra Characters: At the character select screen in Saturn mode, hold L and R, then enter the following code: up, down, X, Y, Z. Extra characters are at your fingertips.
