RULES:
You have 30 bullets in a clip. To reload, shake the gun. You will automatically reload if you take damage. Not a very good alternative method. For the PS3 port you can also press the appropriate button(s.) You can have a maximum of 9 lives. Powerups can be found, usually hidden in destructible objects. Shoot a powerup to pick it up. How to use a Grenade... 1: Press the button on the gun to take a grenade out. 2: Hold the button as long as desired to keep the Grenade in your hand (if you simply tap the button, the Grenade will be thrown as soon as possible.) 3: Release the button to throw the Grenade where your gun is pointing. Note that you can't fire the SMG while you are holding a Grenade. Also, if you are not pointing your gun at the screen when you release the button, the Grenade will NOT be thrown. Useful if you change your mind. At several points in the game, you will be faced with dicey situations. At these points, you will be prompted to shake the gun. Shake the gun a sufficient amount to succeed. A handy meter will indicate how you're doing by filling up as you shake. Success results in good things, while failure results in bad things. Sometimes when an enemy attacks you in a certain way, you will get a shake prompt. Success results in you shrugging the enemy off, possibly knocking back other nearby enemies as well. Failure results in a loss of life. When facing a mob of enemies (specifically zombies) and they get too close, sometimes you'll get a shake prompt to push the enemies back. Success results in the enemies being pushed away for more breathing room. Failure will result in you being pushed down. At several points, scripted dangers will give you a shake prompt. Usually, these determine whether you take damage or not, but some can also determine your path. Sometimes an enemy will push you down. Only enemies at certain parts can do this. You are briefly unable to attack or reload when you fall. When you recover, 1-3 enemies (depending on how many enemies are close enough to participate) will be standing over you and try to attack. In 2-player mode, BOTH players will get hit by any successful attacks. They will continue to do so until you kill all participating enemies, at which point you will get back up. Don't worry, no other enemies can join in on a stomping session in progress. Killing enemies by hitting their weak spot (which is usually the head) gives you a Critical Hit bonus. To clarify, this means the killing shot must be at their weakness; it is okay to wound them elsewhere first. If you kill consecutive enemies with weak spot hits, your bonus will increase. Killing a single enemy by this manner gives you a GOOD! bonus. A second kill gives you an EXCELLENT! bonus. A third kill gives you an AMAZING! bonus. Any kills beyond that will award PERFECT! bonuses. You begin each stage with 3 Grenades. You will also have 3 Grenades if you continue. Any Grenades left unused are lost at the end of a stage (although you get a point bonus for each one) or when you continue. There are bonus rooms to be found in the game. They are entered by hitting certain objects (like doors.) Sometimes the object merely needs to be shot, sometimes the object needs to be hit by a Grenade. At the end of a level, you are graded based on your total score, accuracy, and number of Critical Hits. On each category you will be given one of 5 grades, in order from worst to best: Not Bad; Good; Excellent; Amazing; or Perfect. You will also be given an overall rank based on the grades achieved in those categories. Those are, in order from worst to best: E; D; C; B; A; and S. At the end of the game, you will be given an overall ranking based on your ranks from each stage. Those rankings are, in order from worst to best: Rookie Agent; Average Agent; Standard Agent; Leading Agent; Master Agent; Expert Agent; Top Agent; and Special Agent. If you earn an overall B or A rank on a stage, you will earn a Life Bonus. If you score an S rank, you will earn 2 Life Bonuses. POWERUPS: Life Bonus: Adds one life to your credit, unless you are at the max. If so, you get a point bonus instead. Grenade Bonus: Adds one grenade to your stash. When thrown, a Grenade will explode after a moment and do damage to anything caught within a certain radius. The amount of damage done depends on their proximity to the explosion as well as the distance from you. Obviously, the closer an enemy is to a Grenade, the more damage done. Bronze Coin: Gives you a 200 point bonus. Silver Coin: Gives you a 400 point bonus. Gold Coin: Gives you a 600 point bonus. Top Hat: Gives you an 800 point bonus. Golden Frog: Eh? Gives you a 1,000 point bonus. Jumps up and down, which can make it difficult to hit. Mini Magician: Gives you a 2,000 point bonus. It flies around a lot to piss you off. Toy Bus: Gives you a 3,000 point bonus. When revealed, it will slowly drive across the screen. Requires MANY shots to break. Bell: Gives you a 100 point bonus. However, it can be shot up to 20 times before it disappears, resulting in a total of 2,000 possible points. BAD GUYS: I looked, but found no sources to provide any names of the creatures in this game. Therefore, I will use names of similar enemies from previous games as well as made-up ones. Also, there are a ton of different looking zombie creatures, but they all pretty much just fall into separate categories of enemies that behave in the same exact manner so I'll just consider them a single species. David: Formerly known as Mark II, David, and Sam. An unarmed zombie, usually with no shirt (they exist in bare-skinned and tattooed varieties, and then there are guys in blue jackets just like Johnny.) They just shamble up and try to attack by clawing you. They can also grab you, which can be shaken off. A single burst to the head will kill them- on easier settings, a single bullet will kill them. Gillan: Otherwise normal-looking zombies who often hold their heads as if they've got a headache (they wear either bloody white labcoats or have a very punk look going on.) They attack just like Davids. However, they often swing their heads around with their hands up while approaching, making clean headshots more difficult. They will drop their arms if they decide to run forward. Claw Monkeyboy: A small creatures with claws. They run along floors and walls with equal ease. They attack by jumping onto you and slashing. Sometimes you can save yourself by shaking. Normally they spin around in a spiral (corkscrew) manner; if they flip, they are going to give you a chance to break free. The good news is that they hang on you a moment before striking (if they attack rather than grab) and they always end up in the middle of the screen when they do, making it easy to kill them then. Hans: A very bulky zombie (they're either wearing black jackets with what appear to be bandages on the head or decked out in a doorman uniform (at least, they remind me of them.)) He will charge forward and nail you with his shoulders. Don't get careless because they can close the gap between you fast. He can also attack by grabbing you, which can be shaken off. They rarely do this though. More durable than the other enemies. Ebitan: Kinda looks like a moldy zombie. His head seems to be his weak spot but it appears to be incredibly hard to actually hit at times though (some sources say the weak point is their remaining eye.) They move pretty fast for a zombie and jump forward to bite. They can also grab you, which can be shaken off. Frogman: A humanoid with characteristics of a frog. His primary mode of attack is to lash out with his long tongue, which is telegraphed with a little tongue-swinging before striking. He can also jump on you, which can be shaken off. Charles: Formerly known as Bob. A corpulent zombie. When unarmed, they will charge you with a shoulder ram like Hans. Some carry barrels which they throw at you. His stomach can withstand a bit of damage, so go for the head. Murrer: A maggot-type creature. They have no weak point- a single shot will kill one. They slither up and try to latch onto your face. Always attack in groups. Easy enough to deal with. Just watch out for more than one to jump at once. Blowtorch Monkeyboy: A small creature with a blowtorch in one hand and a propane tank in the other. He will primarily try to get up close and burn you with his torch, although they don't HAVE to be close to do so. If you see him igniting his torch, he's about to attack. He can also jump forward and clobber you with his propane tank although he very seldom does this. Aside from his head, he also has an unspoken 2nd weakness: if you shoot his tank several times, it will explode and kill him as well as anyone unlucky enough to be standing nearby, and 'being on the screen' is usually considered nearby. This does NOT award you a Critical Hit, but it won't make you lose your current Critical Hit streak either. They wear welding masks that give their heads some protection. Simon: A tall muscular (though not as butch as Hans) zombie (they're either wearing black jackets or striped wifebeaters.) These guys have the ability to throw things at you like in 3. They'll be holding their objects over the heads. You'll often have sufficient time to destroy the object (or him) before he even throws it. Unarmed, they will either punch or clothesline you. Sometimes they'll grab you before punching, giving you a chance to shake free, although that's rare. About as durable as Hans. Kageo: Formerly known as Mummy. A zombie who doesn't seem to be having much luck catching victims. Attacks like a Mark. Nothing real special about him except that he now moves with a swaying motion, making it harder for you to score a headshot. They also move faster than your typical zombie. Johnny: A zombie with a blue coat, typically armed with a pair of axes. They have regained the ability to throw their axes, although many will simply try to slash you. If they throw, they usually throw one axe at a time, but some will throw both axes at once. They like to carry their axes in front of their faces, thus shielding them. Since you don't have a shotgun anymore, this proves to be an annoyance once again. However, if you hit them elsewhere (like their lower chest) they will briefly lower their axes and give you a clean shot. There are a few who are unarmed (usually because they threw their axes away) and attack accordingly, making them identical to a Mark. As a result, I will refer to unarmed Johnny's as Davids. They can grab you when unarmed. Knife Monkeyboy: A small creature with a hard hat and a knife in each hand. They jump at you and slash with their knives. Unlike their claw homies, these guys hurt you as soon as they come in contact. They can directly jump on you or do a crazy spinning flying attack. Very dangerous because they are fast. Some say shooting their legs slows them down a bit but I didn't notice. Torso: Zombies who are missing their lower halves for some reasons (remember those zombies you used to blow in half from Resident Evil 2 once you discovered you could? These guys are like that.) They're a bit faster than before. They will jump up with exceptional strength and try to bite you. Due to their low position and compact size, they can be surprisingly difficult to hit. Sometimes you can shake off an attack. Bat: Winged mammals. No weak point- one hit will kill them. They fly at you like kamikaze pilots, although they don't flitter straight like before. They practice hit and run, so if they connect, you won't see them again. Mark: An unarmed zombie with a shirt and tie. Identical to Davids in most aspects, namely durability. However, their attacks are different. They will either strike with their arms or bite. The former is telegraphed by them raising both of their arms above their head while the bite is announced by them thrashing their head around. The latter attack is VERY slow. He can also grab you like David, and just like David, you can shake him off. Since I named 'em this time, they're just Marks. Batman: A human-shaped creature that happens to have wings. They attack by flying at you. They don't fly straight, and they only stand somewhat still while hovering a good distance from you, so hitting them can be tricky, especially in their weak area. Clancey: A zombie wearing a cop uniform. These guys are FAST. Really fast. I guess they are the successors of Rogan Commandos. They can sidestep in a blink of an eye. And they can move in on you almost as fast. He's also slightly more durable than your average zombie. Often they will jump onto the hood of your car (as you only face them while in one) and try to stomp on you. They will only stomp while on the car and they won't back down until they're dead. When they are not on a car, they will roundhouse kick you. They can also jump at you in an attempt to grab you, but rarely do. Alien: Armored white monsters. Unlike most other enemies, his head is NOT his weak point Instead, the black patch on his chest is. These guys can pass through solid matter. They don't use their abilities during combat; only when they appear (for maximum scariness.) They don't have any special weaponry though, and just punch. They can also do a charging attack. As I said, they are fully covered in armor, and take a bit of lead to put down. Albino: White beings. They carry blue blades that they either throw at you or slash with (usually the former.) The blades also have a tendency to block shots while in their hands. After throwing a blade, they may throw the other right after. They'll magically spawn more blades. They must get close to slash, but they can simply teleport right in front of you. They might try slashing more than once in a row instead of falling back. Don't be surprised to see them on walls and ceilings. Very annoying to deal with, and deadly in groups. Luke: White zombies with electric blades for hands, like something out of Warhammer. I figured being stabbed was bad enough, but getting fried while being impaled? Ouch. His arms are no longer bulletproof. MY TIPS: George Romero fans should already know this, but aim for the head if at all possible. They die faster, and now it can gain you extra lives. It's not hard to score at least a B on any chapter, and that is worth an extra life. However, don't always rely on being able to do so. If the zombie is blocking his head, or if time is insufficient, just go for the chest. For the most part, the enemy who is CLOSEST to you is your biggest threat. Due to the sheer number of enemies that tend to crowd the screen, this is no longer 100% true like in previous games- an enemy BEHIND the front row of enemies can strike you. Keep an eye out for enemies to signal that they are about to attack. Enemies with projectiles are an exception. Seriously, a lot of people just don't get this. Unlike most other shooting games, you don't get a split-second of safety after being hit. You can lose a lot of life fast! Keep shooting! The key to this game is knowing when to shoot carefully and when to hold down the trigger. Firing short bursts or single shots will handle most situations. Occasionally (like when a zombie jumps out in your face) you'll need to fill it full of lead quickly or perhaps you'll be facing down a mob. Efficiently dispatching zombies will reward you more than simply spraying and praying, however survival is your #1 priority. It is really easy to earn at least a "B" for a chapter and earn a Life Bonus. Learn to recognize when an enemy does their instant hit attacks and when they do their attacks that let you shake free (not all enemies have one.) This will let you know the urgency of a situation, as a grab can be dealt with while an attack will hurt. Although failing such a prompt will hurt, the prompts are so easy to complete it really isn't much of one. Many enemies have very unique attacks that you can easily recognize. Oftentimes, allowing an enemy to grab you is in fact advantageous since shaking it off results in you pushing back a mob of enemies for more breathing room. However, this trick should only be used against the zombie-type (meaning it looks like it was human) enemies. Other enemies have harder-to-see coming grabs and they either don't attack in big enough groups to make this worthwhile anyway or are not close enough to be knocked back. Never put the gun down until the level is over. I guarantee something will jump out and surprise you. Going for the best ending? You should. Here's the basic lesson: aim for the head whenever possible; memorize the locations of the bonus items; try your best to only score headshots; avoid being hit (yeah, you should always try not to be hit, but here it will also take off points); shoot anything that can be destroyed for free points; and continue hitting dead enemies as they fall. Remember, accuracy counts in this one. Finally, keep an eye out for big point opportunities in my walkthrough. In addition, another good idea (for good players) is to play a 2P game... by yourself! This means additional zombies for you to kill (but don't actually USE the other gun. You want all the points to go to YOU, not be divided between both players.) Plus, the second player can take hits for you and preserve your life and points. However, this makes the game harder. Bosses will require more shots to repel their attacks. I know you're probably gonna be sick of the FMV's by the third attempt, but don't skip em'! Give your fingers a break! ABOUT THIS GUIDE: Unlike my other guides, this one provides a very detailed overview of the game and the enemies you will face (however, I usually don't bother to count the number of enemies in groups greater than 5- too much hassle and there's often more on 2P anyway.) I also cover the locations of all known powerups and the various routes. Basically, the entire game. Also, to cover the paths in an intelligent and relatively hassle-free fashion, there are hyperlinks linking with other places on the same page. Just look for the underlined words. The paragraph you're looking for SHOULD be at the very top of the page. I also put in an extra line between paragraphs where the links take you. CHEATS/UNLOCKABLES: No cheats, but there are unlockables for the PS3 version... The House Of The Dead 4: Special: Simply beat the game. Now you can play the special ride game that you've in all probability never got to even see. Bonus Content: Simply beat the game. Now you can watch an interview that's short but somewhat amusing.
