RULES:
You can have a maximum of 9 lives at once. You have 6 shells in a clip. To reload in the arcade, pump the shotgun. For the home releases, the shotgun will automatically reload when you run out of shots, get hit, or watch a cutscene. On the Xbox and PC versions, you can also hit the reload button, fire off the screen, or use the Pelican's pump. In the Wii version, simply aim off the screen. Throughout the game, your teammate will get into perilous situations. If playing 2P, one of you will be the endangered species (dunno if there's a determining factor) and the endangered person will NOT be able to attack during this time. Saving them will give you a Life (or time) and boost your score. In 2P, your partner will not take any damage if you fail. There is no penalty for hitting the person. Shoot projectiles out of the air to save yourself (barrels, knives, bodies, monitors, containers, bolts, white crap.) You get a bonus for shooting monsters in the head, especially if that's the only place you hit them. Obviously, this doesn't work on creatures that don't have heads. Like before, you can blow most zombies into pieces. You can blow off arms to remove an enemy's ability to use a weapon, and cause an incoming attack with an arm to miss altogether. However, if an enemy loses an arm, he will simply resort to clawing with his other arm, biting if he lacks either arm, and simply ramming you if his torso is all that remains. Typically when a zombie loses their head, they're finished, but sometimes (if you shoot em' up real fast) they can still function. This appears to be a 'glitch' caused by shooting foes a lethal amount of times before you SHOULD be able to (like say, by using the autofire mode) sorta as a counterbalance for cheating. In The House Of The Dead 2 & 3 Return, there's a special mode where enemies require shots to their critical points (like the head) to actually kill them. Shooting them elsewhere does no good. To compensate, you can use a melee attack to kill any close enemies or 'block' a bosses' attack. The catch is that using the melee attack results in you having to reload. You can't use this attack during a reload. POWERUPS: Life Bonus: Survival mode only. Adds one life to your credit, unless you are at the max. Gold Coin: Gives you 300 points. When revealed, it jumps up, lands, and then settles onto its side. Needles to say, it's a lot harder to hit when it's laying flat. Twisted Coin: Gives you 200 points. Like a Gold Coin, it jumps, lands, and settles onto it's side as best it can. However, since it's twisted, it doesn't land flat and is much easier to nab than a Gold one. Crystal Coin: Gives you 100 points. However, the coin can be hit multiple times. In addition, for each consecutive hit the value of the points will increase, up to a maximum of 1,500. Doesn't move around at all, thank goodness. Golden Frog: Eh? Gives you 1,000 points. Jumps up down, which can make it difficult to hit. Listen for ribbits. Mini Magician: Gives you 2,000 points. Gotta love it: it says, "I've been waiting for this time to come," in a high-pitched voice. It flies around a lot to piss you off. Mecha Zombie: Gives you 3,000 points. When revealed, it will slowly walk across the screen. Requires MANY shots to break. Will fall down after shot a bunch to prevent it from escaping. Makes a mechanical noise as it walks. Clock: Time Attack mode only. Increases the time remaining. Comes in 5, 7, 15, and 25 second denominations. Also awards a point bonus of 100, 200, 300, and 1,000, respectively. BAD GUYS: Some of these guys weren't named in the manual, so I had to come up with a few (probably lame) placeholders. A few were in the previous games, so I dubbed their names upon their offspring. Mark II: Formerly known as David (and Sam before that.) Zombie with no special abilities. They just shamble up and try to bite you. A good head or chest shot will kill. Just for the record, I will refer to them in the walkthrough simply as Marks. Fuck the II. Kageo: Formerly known as Mummy. A zombie who doesn't seem to be having much luck catching victims. His most distinctive characteristic in previous games was his lower durability. However, this weakness is not so pronounced now. A good head or chest shot will kill. Just imagine he's a Mark II. Julie: A female zombie (not that you would notice without reading the instruction manual.) Seemingly identical to Mark II in all ways. Monkeyboy: Weird compact creatures that jump and attack with spears or knives. There's 2 flavors: blue guys with knives, and green guys with spears. Their attack methods are the same. These guys are weak; most will die from a single hit as long as most of your pellets connect, no matter where. Ebitan: Kinda looks like a moldy zombie. Aside from biting, they also like to slash. They move pretty fast for a zombie and often jump suddenly. A good head or chest shot will kill. Sometimes (very seldom in my experience) when you shoot them, they will get blown in half. The upper part will continue to attack, pulling itself across the floor. I had thought this was caused by shooting at their waist, but it seems this is completely random as I've bisected them with a glancing headshot before. Mini Ebitans: Much shorter (younger?) versions of Ebitans. These guys attack by slashing. They move faster than their taller homies and jump with amazing speed from a distance when they attack. Don't underestimate these guys. I think they can also be split in half but I'm not sure. Morris: A zombie with an axe. They swing their weapons in either a spinning motion or in an overhead fashion. They should have picked a more suitable weapon for themselves, as they have trouble lugging it around and thus move slowly. A good head or chest shot will kill, although it often takes 2 to the chest. Blowing off an arm will disarm them. Charles: Formerly known as Bob. A corpulent zombie. When unarmed, they will charge you with a head butt (no drop-kick anymore.) Some carry barrels which they throw at you. You can blow off an arm to make them drop the barrel. On Very Easy, a REALLY good headshot can kill. It will take 2 good blasts to the head to kill one. Their stomachs take at least 2 blasts on Very Easy, often more, so go for the head. I've seen a lot of leeway on shooting stomachs: anywhere from 2 to 7(!) shots. Vulture: A bird with a BAD attitude. They swoop in and try to claw your face off. They will take 2 good blasts to drop. Their durability is incredibly consistent; it almost always takes me exactly 2 shots to kill each one. You can always land a free hit as they take off, though you can't kill them. You can't alter their anatomy. Johnny: A zombie armed with axes. They have strangely lost their ability to throw axes, which leaves them with trying to slash you. They like to carry their axes in front of their faces, thus shielding them. This isn't such a problem now that you have a shotgun, but can still save them. They seem slightly more durable than Marks, although a good head or chest shot will still kill. Simon: A muscular zombie. These guys have learned a new trick: throwing things at you. They'll be holding their objects over the heads. You'll often have sufficient time to destroy the object (or him) before he even throws it. Unarmed, they will either punch or charge you with a clothesline move. On Very Easy, a good head or chest shot will kill. It will take at least 2 good blasts to the head or chest kill them (I don't recall ever pulling off a 1-hit kill.) Upper Torso: Zombies who are missing their lower halves for some reason (remember those zombies you used to blow in half from Resident Evil 2 once you discovered you could? These guys are like that.) They're a bit faster than before. They will jump up with exceptional strength and try to bite you. Due to their low position and compact size, they can be surprisingly difficult to hit. A good head or chest shot will kill. Raymond: An offshoot of Samson and Max. A zombie with a buzzsaw. He'll try to slice you up. Also known to grind a piece of pipe before attacking. Although he makes no special effort to do so, his saw seems more likely to block shots than Max's. These guys are very tough sumbitches; it takes at least 2 REALLY good headshots to kill one, however it usually takes 3. It takes at least 3 good blasts to the chest, though more likely 4 or 5. I found myself consistently killing in 3 chest shots on Very Easy, 4 on Normal, and 5 on Very Hard, although his saw might be blocking some buckshot. You can't alter their anatomy. Azteca: A burly zombie similar to previous Simons. Many carry steel girders in their right arm which they swing. The girders will also help deflect shots. Others are unarmed and attack like a normal zombie, though they have Simon's clothesline charge as well. Their durability seems pretty random: One good blast to the head or chest can kill one, although it usually takes at least 2. You can't alter their anatomy, at least to the best of my knowledge. Rogan Commando: A zombie in military gear. Attacks with a knife in each hand, but also fond of performing jump kicks. These guys can move FAST (they like to sidestep) and often somersault or jump so be wary. Wasn't enough to save themselves from the dead though... Although tougher than your average zombie, a good head or chest shot will kill (though the latter is not something to count on.) Cain: A zombie with tentacles for hands. They reach out with their loooooong hands to strike. A good head or chest shot will kill, but this isn't something to bank on. Their tentacles can often get in the way and take some buckshot, especially if you shoot for the chest. Frederic: Similar in nature to the Rubins and Mickey of previous outings. Equipped with LOTS of mini blades, they either throw em' at you or get in close and slash. Most first throw their blades (often as they jump out suddenly), then charge. Although they throw a bunch at once, they all count as a single projectile. They're fast little punks. A good head or chest shot will kill. Murrer: A maggot-type creature. They slither up and try to latch onto your face. A single pellet will kill one. Always attack in groups. Bat: Winged mammals. They fly straight at you like kamikaze pilots. If a single pellet connects with one, it's dead. They fly straight at you. They practice hit and run, so if they connect, you won't see them again. Licker: A red monstrosity that resembles a creature from Resident Evil 2 of the same name. They crawl along ceilings and walls. To attack, they come swinging down to claw you. A good head or very good chest shot will kill. However, hitting the head is often not that easy due to their angle of attack, and the chest will often require 2. You can't alter their anatomy. Spider: Arachnid. They jump on your face and sting. Fortunately for you, they jump 'onto' the screen and stay there for a second or two before they do any damage. If one does, kill it ASAP. A single pellet will kill a spider. Electric Monkeyboy: A monkeyboy with some sort of electrical weapon rather than a spear. These guys behave quite differently than the other Monkeyboys These ones are more erratic and jump side-to-side, often from walls or other objects. However, they are just as weak as their non-electric brethen. They 'hang' on for a split second before actually doing any damage, so if one gets you, act quickly. These guys are just as weak as their cousins; most will die from a single hit as long as most of your pellets connect, no matter where. MY TIPS: George Romero fans should already know this, but aim for the head if at all possible. They die faster, and it gets you more points. However, don't always rely on being able to do so. If the zombie is blocking his head, or if time is insufficient, just go for the chest. After some research, I discovered that the durability of enemies varies within their own species. In addition, the damage an enemy can withstand depends on the difficulty. What I'm saying is don't be counting bullets and assuming a certain amount will do the trick. This tidbit is even more true than previous games due to the use of a shotgun, where damage is based on how many pellets hit their target. For the most part, the enemy who is CLOSEST to you is your biggest threat. Enemies with projectiles are an exception. However, this never really comes down to this. Seriously, a lot of people just don't get this. Unlike most other shooting games, you don't get much of a grace period after being hit. You can lose a lot of life fast! Keep shooting! Never put the gun down until the level is over. I guarantee something will jump out and surprise you. If an enemy is taking a swing at you, blow off the arm he's using and the attack will miss! Of course, that's easier said than done, and hardly worth it unless you know that you can't possibly kill the enemy before he finishes the attack. You can't shoot your partner during rescue sequences, so fire with impunity. Reload the gun manually whenever you get a chance. Remember, the reload is not instantaneous like other games and that split second could result in a lost life. I know you're probably gonna be sick of the FMV's by the third attempt, but don't skip em'! Give your fingers a break! If you're playing at home you could just pause the game. ABOUT THIS GUIDE: Unlike my other guides, this one provides a very detailed overview of the game and the enemies you will face. I also cover the locations of all known powerups and the various routes. Basically, the entire game. Also, to cover the paths in an intelligent and relatively hassle-free fashion, there are hyperlinks linking with other places on the same page. Just look for the underlined words. The paragraph you're looking for SHOULD be at the very top of the page. CHEATS/UNLOCKABLES: Unlockables: The House Of The Dead 2: Beat survival mode or time attack mode.
