RULES:

You can have a maximum of 5 lives at once.

You have 6 bullets in a clip. To reload, fire off the screen.

Throughout the game, you will meet various civilians, often in peril. If chased or attacked by monsters, you can kill their aggressors and save them. However, you only have a short time before the monsters will get them. Saving them will give you points, possibly a Life Bonus, and may also determine what path you take. At the end of a level, you will receive a Life Bonus for rescuing a certain amount of them.

There are various paths through the game. There are all sorts of ways to change your path.

Shoot projectiles out of the air to save yourself (barrels, axes, knives, fireballs.)

You get a bonus for shooting monsters in the head, especially if that's the only place you hit them. Obviously, this doesn't work on frogs, bats, and maggots because they don't have heads. On the other hand, you lose points whenever you get hit, kill a researcher, or let a civilian die.

Most enemies can have their various limbs blown off. This can disarm them, but they certainly won't become harmless. I haven't seen any zombies able to ram you with everything above the chest gone on this installment though.

POWERUPS:

Life Bonus: Adds one life to your credit, unless you are at the max.

Coin: Gives you 100 points.

Necklace: Gives you 250 points.

Diamond: Gives you 500 points.

Golden Cat: Gives you 600 points.

Golden Frog: Eh? Gives you 1,000 points.

Apple: Have no clue. No confirmation of picking it up. Doesn't seem to effect score. Does it do anything?

Mushroom: Same as Apple. I can't imagine they would be put in the game with no use.

BAD GUYS:

Some of these guys weren't named in the manual, so I had to come up with a few (probably lame) placeholders. A few got names in the sequels, and I dubbed them upon their forefathers.

David: Formerly known as Sam. A shirtless zombie with no special abilities. They just shamble up and try to punch or headbutt you. A single headshot will kill them. Sometimes they will simply mill around in the distance and won't attack. Killing them is optional, but provides extra points.

Bradley: An unarmed zombie that wears a shirt. He behaves just like David, except he's slightly more durable. On Very Easy or Easy, this is trivial, but on Normal and above he takes 2 shots to the head to kill.

Johnny: A zombie with an axe in each hand. Some will come up close and try to slash you while others will throw their axes at you. The latter will throw one or two axes, then will usually walk off or just stand there and you don't have to kill them. However, some will proceed to attack up close. 2 shots to the head will kill them. These guys are more annoying than their counterparts in part 1; they often hold their axes in front of their faces, making headshots tricky. Like in the first, the throwers are usually not as durable, although they are more durable than the ones in the first, requiring more than one body shot to kill. There are also different-looking Johnnies (wearing a non-flannel shirt) who are all weak but otherwise attack in the same manner (throws axes and then attacks unarmed.)

Murrer: A maggot-type creature. Comes in pink or green. They slither up and try to latch onto your face. A single shot will kill one. Always attack in groups, but they usually come slithering out from an opening of some kind. Just aim there and shoot rapidly. You should get 'em all.

Max: Like Samson, but worse- they're zombies with 2 chainsaws! These guys jam their saws into your neck. You can blow off the arms to disarm him. If disarmed, he will attack like a normal zombie. 2 shots to the head will kill on Very Easy. Anything higher requires 3! They no longer block their heads with their weapons, so aim for it! They like to get close and simply raise their weapons in a threatening manner before attacking, giving you a great headshot opportunity.

Ebitan: Now spelled with a B instead of a V (probably just a Japanese mistranslation; they have a problem with B's and V's too.) Kinda looks like a moldy zombie. Comes in green, black, and red. They move pretty fast for a zombie and can really surprise you. Green and black act the same way. However, green Ebitans will die after a shot to the head whereas black Ebitans take 2. Red Ebitans wait under the water for you to pass, then come flying out of the water for a suicide ram. If successful, they won't reappear. A single hit anywhere kills a red one.

Randy: A bit different than #1; they are now more like the monkeys. Method of attack is to jump at you with their razor-sharp claws, which they will accomplish by jumping all over the place, and sometimes even climbing on the ceilings! They'll shrug off several bullets to the chest, but a headshot will kill. Their arms are armored from the elbow down and the legs also covered from the knee down. A hit often knocks them down, and you can juggle them slightly with midair hits.

Kageo: Formerly known as Mummy. A zombie who doesn't seem to be having much luck catching victims. Basically the same as a normal zombie, except less durable. Any headshot will immediately drop them.

Bob: A corpulent zombie. When unarmed, they will charge and drop-kick you in the gut or jump on you. Some carry barrels (oil or wooden) which they throw at you. The oil drums take 3 shots to destroy while the wooden ones take 2. You can blow off an arm to make them drop the barrel. After throwing their barrels, they usually don't attack and become free kills, although some then charge and attack. Their stomachs will absorb nearly a full clip, but it will only take 2 shots to the head to put them down. They don't attack with their arms so removing them is a waste of time.

Torso: Zombies who are missing their lower halves for some reasons (remember those zombies you used to blow in half from Resident Evil 2 once you discovered you could? These guys are like that.) Unsurprisingly, these guys aren't as fast as their full-featured counterparts. They will jump up with exceptional strength and try to bite you. Due to their low position and compact size, they can be surprisingly difficult to hit. Not very durable.

The Bird(s): Birds with a BAD attitude. Similar to bats in regards to method of attack (dive-bombing) and the fact that one shot will kill 'em. However, these guys don't go away if they hit you.

Mickey: Similar in nature to the Rubins of #1. Attacks by either throwing knives or slashing. Unlike the Rubins, they have an unlimited supply of knives. They're fast little punks and will approach you in a zigzag fashion. If they get close enough, they'll do a slash attack. They will throw knives when far and slash when close, exclusively. If you land a hit, they usually backflip away. Their bodies can take a bit of punishment too.

Damned If I Know (DIIK's): Ugly little mass of something that only appears in 2 places. They will either slither up to you and explode in your face or spit yellow crap at you. Good news is the former method of attack means at least they won't bother you again. 1 bullet kills, but they slither fast!

Evil Fish: Duh, fish. They jump out of the water and bite (ow!) MO is hit-and-run. One shot will send them flying back into the water. You can hit them while they're underwater (watch for their 'shadows'.)

Simon: A muscular zombie. These guys will either punch or charge you with their shoulders. A single headshot will kill one on Very Easy. Anything above requires 2.

Bat: Winged mammals. They fly straight at you like kamikaze pilots. 1 bullet = 1 kill. They fly more erratic than in #1 and are more difficult to hit. They practice hit and run, so if they connect, you won't see them again.

Ken: Somewhat of an offshoot of Arthur. He attacks with his claws. His most distinctive characteristic is the metal mask that covers his face. His arms from the elbow down are bulletproof. It takes 2 headshots to kill him.

Joey: A zombie with a vest and knives. Most throw both knives at once and then attack unarmed. A select few will instead try to slash you with them. Although he throws them both at once, each knife needs to be shot down individually. 2 headshots to kill.

Gregory: A zombie with a huge sword not unlike Cloud's from Final Fantasy 7. As you can no doubt guess, that is his method of attack. He usually has his sword in front of him as he moves, thereby shielding his face and most of his chest from harm. Get the sides or his face right when he attacks. It takes 2 headshots to kill. If you take off an arm, he will be disarmed. I recommend doing so because headhunting while he's got the sword is difficult.

Lizardman: A green bastard with a tail. They crawl along the floor or along the ceiling. They either jump on you when in range (ground) or come swinging down and claw you (while hanging.) I'm pretty sure they take 2 headshots to kill although it's hard to tell. Chest is a bit tough. Shooting his tail doesn't seem to count as a hit at all.

Hans: A muscular zombie with a hat. These guys will either punch or charge you with their shoulders. Basically he's the Bradley equivalent of Simon: he attacks the same but is more slightly more durable. It takes 2 headshots to kill him on any difficulty. They only appear in the 5th level.

Peter: Apparently just a normal zombie, but a purplish pigmentation makes him stand out. Attacks like David, but he has a surprise in store... Hitting him in the chest will often trigger his surprise attack: a maggot bursts out of his chest Alien-style and flies at you! Blow it out of the air before it gets you. Peter will die as a result of this attack. If you do a headshot or just hit his limbs repeatedly, he won't unleash this attack.

Alien: Freaky folks with transparent heads. Lookie them brains! These guys either can pass through solid matter. They don't use their abilities during combat; only when they appear (for maximum scariness.) They don't have any special weaponry though, and just punch. 2 headshots to kill. You can't alter their anatomy in any way.

Albino: White beings. They carry blue blades that they either throw at you or slash with (usually the former.) The blades also have a tendency to block shots while in their hands. Don't be surprised to see them on walls and ceilings. They tend to fall down for a second when shot. Kinda nice that it gives you some breathing time, but it also makes it hard to do follow up shots. Otherwise, they're not too resilient to being shot. A single headshot will kill on Very Easy, but I dunno about higher levels (can't tell when I score a headshot.) You can't alter their anatomy in any way.

Luke: White zombies with electric blades for hands, like something out of Warhammer. I figured being stabbed was bad enough, but getting fried while being impaled? Ouch. His arms are armored from the elbow down, and sometimes they (unintentionally) block shots. These guys are tough sumbitches: they take 2 shots to the head to kill on Very Easy and 3 on anything above. You can't alter their anatomy in any way.

MY TIPS:

George Romero fans should already know this, but aim for the head if at all possible. They die faster, and it gets you more points. However, don't always rely on being able to do so. If the zombie is blocking his head, or if time is insufficient, just go for the chest. After some research, I discovered that the durability of enemies varies within their own species. In particular, enemies attacking civilians tend to be weaker (sometimes dying with only a single hit.) In addition, the damage an enemy can withstand depends on the difficulty. What I'm saying is don't be counting bullets and assuming a certain amount will do the trick.

Many enemies tend to walk slowly at first, then speed up (i.e.: start running) once you shoot them. Try not to hit anyone other than the zombie you're currently focusing on and move onto the next one when he dies. You can calmly mow down a group of zombies with well-aimed headshots. If you start firing wildly into a mob, they'll all start running at you and you have less time to react.

For the most part, the enemy who is CLOSEST to you is your biggest threat. Enemies with projectiles are an exception. However, this never really comes down to this. Seriously, a lot of people just don't get this.

Unlike most other shooting games, you don't get much of a grace period after being hit. You can lose a lot of life fast! Keep shooting!

Many enemies have a death groan/shriek/noise. Listen for them so you know when to keep shooting. If you don't hear a dying utterance, they're gonna get back up. This is most effective with Randy.

The key to this game is knowing when to shoot carefully, and when to panic. Calmly firing single shots will handle most situations. Occasionally (like when a zombie jumps out in your face), you'll need to fill it full of lead quickly. However, the drawback to simply unloading is that your accuracy won't be as good unless you're a cyborg or something, and doing it constantly will wear you out quickly.

Never put the gun down until the level is over. I guarantee something will jump out and surprise you.

If an enemy is taking a swing at you, blow off the arm he's using and the attack will miss! Of course, that's easier said than done...

If you think you might accidentally hit a civilian, then don't fire. Its better to simply let a civilian die than to hit one yourself; you lose a life, 200 points, and the person dies anyway.

Going for the best ending? You should. Here's the basic lesson: aim for the head whenever possible; memorize the locations of the bonus items; try your best to only score headshots; avoid being hit (yeah, you should always try not to be hit, but here it will also take off points.) Plus there's a point bonus awarded for completing a chapter without getting hit or only getting hit once (the former is worth more); shoot anything that can be destroyed for free points; and continue hitting dead enemies as they fall. Do NOT rescue all civilians. The paths they will set you on will not yield nearly as many points. It may be possible, but if you're looking here for help, then you probably don't have that kind of skill. If you do rescue them all, the bonus room will be a big asset. So let the path-branching civilians die, but save the ones who don't influence the path. Finally, keep an eye out for big point opportunities in my walkthrough.

In addition, another good idea (for good players) is to play a 2P game... by yourself! This means additional zombies for you to kill (but don't actually USE the other gun. You want all the points to go to YOU, not be divided between both players.) Plus, the second player can take hits for you and preserve your life and points. However, this makes the game MUCH friggin' harder. Bosses will require more shots to repel their attacks. Remember, you both share continues.

I know you're probably gonna be sick of the FMV's by the third attempt, but don't skip em'! Give your fingers a break! If you're playing at home you could just pause the game.

ABOUT THIS GUIDE:

Unlike my other guides, this one provides a very detailed overview of the game and the enemies you will face. I also cover the locations of all known powerups and the various routes. Basically, the entire game. Also, to cover the paths in an intelligent and relatively hassle-free fashion, there are hyperlinks linking with other places on the same page. Just look for the underlined words. The paragraph you're looking for SHOULD be at the very top of the page. Dialog is kinda screwy, but my OCB demanded I document it.
